US Congress proposes celebration of 'National Sikh Day' on April 14

More than a dozen lawmakers, including US lawmaker Raja Krishnamurthy, have moved a resolution in the House of Representatives urging to celebrate April 14 as ‘National Sikh Day’. 

In this resolution tabled in the US House of Representatives (US Congress), it has been said that more than a hundred years ago, Sikhs started settling in America. He has made a significant contribution to the development of America. In this resolution, a request has been made to celebrate ‘National Sikh Day’ in the honor of the Sikh community.

‘Sikh community has empowered the people of US’

According to the resolution, the Sikh community has inspired and empowered the people of America. This proposal, introduced in the US Parliament, has been welcomed by the Sikh Caucus Committee, the Sikh Coordination Committee and the American Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (AGPC). It is noteworthy that seven lakh Sikhs live in the US. 

This number is much more than the Sikhs living in Canada. According to the latest figures there is only five lakh Sikh population. The proposal is sponsored by female parliamentarian Mary Gay Schallen and co-sponsors of more than a dozen lawmakers. These included Kieran Bass, Paul Tanko, Brian K. Fitzpatrick, Daniel Moser, Eric Swalwell, Raja Krishnamurthy, Donald Narcras, Andy Kim, John Gramendy, Richard E. Neill, Brendan F. Biel and David G. Valladao is included. John Gramendy and David G. Walladao is the vice-president of the Sikh Caucus.

Two US lawmakers of Indian origin meet Joe Biden

Two Indian-American lawmakers, Dr. Ami Bera and Pramila Jayapal, met US President Joe Biden at the White House on behalf of two different Democratic organizations. Dr. Ami Bera has been representing Silicon Valley since 2013 and has the longest tenure as an Indian-American in the US House of Representatives. He met Biden on Thursday as part of the new Democrat coalition. He is also the Vice President of this alliance.

According to a report, this coalition of 98 progressive-minded Democrat lawmakers are supporters of economic development, people who promote innovation and responsible policies. The purpose of this meeting was to remind the commitments of the 117th Congress. Soon after, Biden met MP Pramila Jayapal, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. She is the first and only Indian American woman elected to the US House of Representatives.
