Train fares to rise with diesel hike

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted consent to revise train fares.Transport Minister Dilum Amunugama said train fares were not increased in the recent past with the diesel price hike.

“The decision to increase train fares had been taken considering the increase in diesel price in the local market”, he said.

Minister Amunugama said train fares are only around one-third of the bus fares and therefore noted that authorities had emphasised the need for a fare revision.

Cabinet approval has also been granted to increase bus fares with effect fromTuesday (15). Minister Amunugama said the minimum fare for SLTB and private passenger transport buses will be increased by Rs. 3, from Rs. 17 to Rs. 20.

The other categories of bus fares will be increased by 15 percent, he said.
