Thirteen people, including women and children, were killed when they accidentally fell into a well during a wedding ceremony in a village in the Kushinagar district in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh (UP).
According to officials, the women and children at the wedding were sitting on a slab covering an old well. The slab fell down by weight and the people sitting on it fell into the well. They were taken to hospital, where 13 people were pronounced dead. Many have suffered serious injuries in the incident.
Hospital scenes show relatives, who are still in their wedding attire, mourning the loss of their loved ones in this tragedy.
Gorakhpur zone ADG Akhil Kumar said that 13 women have died. The incident took place in Nebua Naurangia of Kushinagar last night at around 8.30 pm. The incident took place during a wedding program, in which some people were sitting on the slab of a well and the slab broke due to heavy load.
The senior official said that compensation of Rs 4 lakh would be given to the family of each person killed in the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “heartbreaking”, expressed his condolences and prayed for speedy recovery of the injured.
Uttar Pradesh (UP) Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the accident. The official handle of the Chief Minister’s Office tweeted that he has directed the concerned authorities to immediately launch rescue and relief operations and provide proper treatment to the injured.
