Post-mortem finds Badalgama boy died of COVID-19

The 10 year old boy who was found dead inside a house at Badalgama on Thursday by the Police after his parents tried to heal their sick son through prayers had died of COVID-19, medical experts said following a post-mortem examination.

The 10-year-old came down with a cold with excess mucus being detected on February 7, but the parents opted to treat him themselves with prayers as per their religious beliefs instead of seeking medical attention or hospitalisation, police said.

Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the Police went to the boy’s house at Andimulla in Badalgama on Wednesday evening after neighbours informed of a stench emanating from the house.

Police had found the decomposing body of the child on a bed with the parents and the grandmother of the 10-year-old boy still praying to bring their son back from the dead.

The Police had later arrested the parents and the grandmother in connection with the death of the child.

The arrested suspects were produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on Friday and the father and grandmother were released on two sureties of Rs. 500,000 each by the Chief Magistrate and ordered the mother to be remanded till February 18.
