West Bengal: TMC, BJP exchange gunfire during fight over paying homage to Netaji

Bhatpara (West Bengal): 

The industrial town of Bhatpara in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal turned into a battlefield on Wednesday – the 125th birth anniversary of legendary freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

A scuffle broke out between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters during an event organized to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in Bhatpara.

“At 10:30 am today, our MLA Pawan Singh had gone to offer tribute to Netaji, wherein TMC’s goons attacked him, fired at him, hurled bricks…They also attacked me when I reached. Everything was happening in front of the police…my car was broken,”

BJP vice president of West Bengal unit, Arjun Singh who was present on the spot told ANI.

Meanwhile, the police have reached the spot and is looking into the matter.

According to reports, tensions erupted when BJP MP Arjun Singh reached the spot to attend the function which had been organised to pay homage to Netaji.. A large police force was present at the spot. 

Unrest erupted over the wreath-laying ceremony at Netaji’s statue. The unrest started as soon as Arjun Singh went to lay the wreath. 

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has alleged that Arjun Singh has gone to the spot to creat unrest. The TMC alleged that the BJP MP attacked TMC activists along with his security guards. 

On the other hand, Arjun Singh alleged that he and BJP MLA Pawan Singh were prevented from garlanding Netaji’s statue. They alleged that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists present at the spot attacked them

CISF personnel fired several rounds to bring the situation under control. It is alleged that TMCactivists were also beaten.

Pictures of the two sides arguing and fighting at the scene were captured on camera. Security personnel somehow managed to remove Arjun Singh from the spot. Police tried to control the situation. The incident has spread tension in the area.

BJP state president Sukanta Majumder has strongly condemned the incident. 

“An MP was prevented from laying a wreath at Netaji’s statue. In this incident, the deteriorating state of law and order in the state has come to light,” h

e said.

Arjun Singh said he had informed the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the Governor, about the whole incident. On the other hand, Trinamool MLA Perth Bhowmick said Arjun Singh has now become irrelevant. So walking the path of creating unrest to get the relevance back.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleged that their party leaders were laying wreaths at Netaji’s statue. At that time the BJP MP came and started a fight. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) also alleged that his security guards fired seven rounds. 

The BJP has accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of firing first.

Notably, last year, the Government had declared January

as ‘Parakram Diwas’ to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Born on January 23, 1897, Netaji played a crucial role in India’s freedom movement. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had also established the Azad Hind Fauj.
