US-China verbal war intensifies as Joe Biden slams Xi Jinping on Ladakh issue

New Delhi:

Verbal warfare has intensified between China and the United States (US). Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned at a meeting of the Davos World Economic Forum (WCF) that a global confrontation could have dire consequences.

Xi Jinping issued the warning after the Joe Biden administration warned the Chinese government during the recent India-China border talks that its attempts to threaten neighboring countries would raise concerns.

The United States (US) has also said it will stand with its partners. The latest statement from Chinese president Xi Jinping is in response to a threat from the Joe Biden administration. After all, what are the impliations?

1-  US president Joe Biden was alarmed by China’s aggressive policy in eastern Ladakh, Taiwan, the South China Sea and the Indo-Pacific region. Apart from India, China’s relations with Taiwan have also seen a historic decline. China claims Taiwan to be a rebel province, while Taiwan considers itself to be a sovereign nation.

Apart from this, China continues to have disputes with many of its neighbors over the Indo-Pacific region and the South China Sea. Meanwhile, in the East China Sea, China has a dispute with Japan.

2- Many countries, including India and the United States (US), have been advocating for freedom and open movement in the Indo-Pacific region amid China’s growing military dominance in the region.

The government of the United States (US) has stated that it wants to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The United States (US) seeks to preserve the freedom of the seas in accordance with international law.

3- China wants to dominate the South China Sea, while Taiwan, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam also have their respective territorial claims in the South China Sea region.

China has also built artificial islands and military bases in the South China Sea, bypassing the claims of neighboring countries. There is a dispute between China and Japan in the East China Sea.

The United States (US) has been supporting its regional allies in the region. The United States (US) has also been sending its naval and air force aircraft here. The United States (US) has linked its move to trying to secure free movement in the China Sea.

4- Taiwan could be a major cause of a future military confrontation between the US and China. If that happens, it will not be possible to ignore the role of India, a key US ally in the QUAD alliance and a major power in the Indian Ocean.

That is why the US is targeting China these days, citing the protection of Taiwan’s interests. Taiwan is another important front in the US plan to blockade China. The United States (US) has made it clear that it will respond to any Chinese action against Taiwan.

China, meanwhile, opposes any foreign intervention in Taiwan, calling for its one-China policy. Chinese fighter jets are seen flying in the skies of Taiwan.

What did the US say?

Ahead of the 14th round of talks between India and China, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki had said that the United States (US) was keeping an eye on the matter.

Regarding China’s aggressive stance on the border with India, Saki said that the US has a close eye on the situation at the India-China border.

“We support a negotiated and peaceful solution to the border dispute,” Psaki said.

“We have a clear position on how we view Beijing’s behavior in this area and around the world,” she added.

“We believe this could destabilize the situation and we are concerned about the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) attempts to intimidate its neighbors.”
