Pakistan: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police chief warns of massive Islamic State attacks at Afghan border

Peshawar:

Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is facing a double threat from the Islamic State (IS) and

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), t

he provincial police chief

has warned.

“The Khorasan module of the terrorist organization IS is a bigger threat to us than the extremist organization Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP),” t

he provincial police chief

Muazzam Jah Ansari

told the media.

Islamic State (IS) militants have carried out several major attacks in Afghanistan’s cities since the Taliban took power. Due to this, the activities of this international terrorist organization are expected to increase in  Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province adjacent to Afghanistan.

“The threat of IS in the province is expected to increase in the future. As a result, the province may face severe terrorist attacks,”

Muazzam Jah Ansari

warned.

In October 2021, eminent physician Sardar Satnam Singh Khalsa was assassinated in the provincial capital Peshawar. The terrorist organization IS claimed responsibility for the killing.

There were two more incidents of

attacks

of the police in the province in October and November last year, in which three policemen were killed. The IS also claimed responsibility for those incidents. The police later arrested those responsible for the killings from Peshawar.

According to Ansari, the TTP has also carried out several major attacks in the province, but the scale of IS attacks is expected to be higher in the future.

“This is likely to happen because of the large number of people sympathetic to IS and TTP in the tribal areas of North and South Waziristan. The poor, illiterate and unemployed population there can contribute dangerously to the spread of IS. The federal government has been made aware of this danger,” he said.
