Public Services, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon in an Extraordinary Gazette on Monday extended the term of Local Government Bodies till March 19, 2023.
The four-year term of 340 Local Authorities, including 41 Urban Councils, 24 Municipal Councils and 275 Pradeshiya Sabhas, was to expire in March. The last Local Government Elections were held on February 10, 2018.
The extension of term of the Local Authorities had been done by the Minister using the powers vested in him under the Urban Councils Ordinance, Municipal Councils Ordinance and the Pradeshiya Sabha Act.
