Gully waste to be purified and used as fertilizer

The National Water Supply Ministry will implement a new programme to manufacture fertilizer using refuse taken from gully bowsers. This was revealed at a ceremony held to distribute 10 gully bowsers to Local Government Institutions under the patronage of Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara.

The National Water Supply Ministry in collaboration with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board hopes to purify water taken from gully bowser refuse and release the purified water into rivers while the remaining refuse will be used to manufacture fertilizer.

National Water Supply Ministry Secretary Dr.Priyath Wickrama said at this crucial juncture when the country needs adequate fertilizer this novel programme of manufacturing fertilizer using refuse from gully bowsers is beneficial.

The Water Supply Ministry said 20 new gully bowser waste purifying centres will be established at main Local Governments institution areas.

According to the initial step of this programme, waste purification centres will begin in main towns and the programme will be extended to other areas in the country.
