GSMB gets VLF Receiver to explore minerals

The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has initiated the identification of mineral resources through a VLF Receiver – (Very Low Frequency) Device which can detect minerals in the Earth’s crust up to 100-100 km away using emitted waves.

Although there is information that our country has a large amount of valuable mineral resources, it has been expensive to explore the mineral resources to locate them and the size and depth of the area where those mineral resources are located.

However, this VLF receiver can detect minerals in the Earth’s crust up to 100-100 km away using the emitted waves.

The equipment worth Rs.3.5 million was purchased from France and the Bureau says that a team of officers of the Bureau are currently being trained in conducting mineral exploration activities with the equipment, the Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera said.

Amaraweera also inquired from the officials of the Bureau regarding the issuance of exploration licenses during mineral exploration. The Minister said that there is information that some people obtain permits to explore for mineral resources but have not been explored for more than 10 years.

The Minister directed that a report be submitted to him regarding the recipients of such licences and that the licences of persons and institutions which do not carry out exploration activities within five years of obtaining licences be revoked and the possibility of transferring them to other persons and institutions be explored.

He said that the country has not been able to make proper use of the land resources as the people who obtain the mineral exploration permits have not carried out proper exploration activities.

The Minister also said that the use of such new technological equipment to identify areas in our country which have not yet been identified as having valuable mineral resources could expedite such activities.
