"Take measures to clean Kelani River"

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Gampaha District MP Ajith Mannapperuma requested the Government to take special measures to clean the Kelani River, as it is the main source providing drinking water to the people in Gampaha.

MP Mannapperuma said that Kelani River is considered the most polluted river in the country as the public, traders, and other industrial companies dump waste to the river. The MP was participating in the Committee Stage Debate on the Appropriation Bill of the Expenditure Heads of the Ports and Shipping Ministry, Water Supply Ministry and several other portfolios.

“If a proper research is done on the quality of the water of the Kelani River, the people will refrain from using the tapped water, MP Mannapperuma said. The MP, therefore, requested the Water Supply Minister to prioritise keeping the Kelani River clean under the Pivithuru Ganga Project. MP Mannapperuma also said the Kelaniya University and the Police are willing to assist the Government in this regard.

MP Mannapperuma, said that the Water Supply Minister is an efficient leader who can resolve the water supply issues in the country. The MP, therefore, requested him to pay special attention on resolving the water issues in the Gampaha District.

Water Supply Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara said that he as the Minister doubled the water supply in 2021. He said that he targets to double the supply again in 2022. “If we go ahead with this much of gusto, would not we be able to cater to all water supply needs of our people in the next five years? Minister Nanayakkara asked.
