SL, Saudi pledge to strengthen Parliamentary ties

Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia have pledged to strengthen Parliamentary relations between the two nations following a meeting held in Riyadh between the Sri Lankan Ambassador in Riyadh Pakeer Mohideen Amza and Speaker of the Shoura Council Sheikh Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al-Asheikh held on Monday (13).

Speaking to the Daily News from Riyadh, Amza said it was a fruitful discussion held with the Speaker of the Shoura Council and it has paved the way for new areas of cooperation between the two countries.

Amza conveyed the greetings of the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament.

During the meeting, a number of issues of common interest were discussed. Amza said that Saudi Arabia is a friendly country which has stood with Sri Lanka in good and bad times. The Saudi Fund for Development has given more than US$ one billion for various infrastructure projects in the island, he added.

Dr. Al-Asheikh expressed his wishes of success to the new Lankan Ambassador in strengthening the relations that unite Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka.

He stressed the Shoura Council’s keenness and interest in developing joint bilateral work and coordination at the level of Parliamentary relations with Sri Lanka, in order to achieve constructive cooperation.

In 2019, Dr. Al-Asheikh led a delegation of the Shoura Council to Sri Lanka on an official visit on an invitation by the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament Karu Jayasuriya. In 2001, Shoura Speaker Dr. Saleh Bin Humeid visited Colombo on a goodwill mission which was reciprocated with a visit by former Sri Lankan Speaker Mohamed Haniffa Mohammed.
