Sea Hawks halt Up Country Lions’ forward march

A spectacular goal in extra time by Sea Hawks Dhanushka Madushka halted the Up Country Lions dominance in their inter club soccer match played for the ‘Super League’ championship at Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

In a closely contested match, the Up Country lads dominated play and executed pressure on their rivals from the start whistle. They missed over half a dozen chances within the first 20 minutes, some of which were very close calls. However, It was a ding dong battle for supremacy as both teams fought hard at an intensive pace, but failed to make any impact on the score line, which remained barren at the breather.

After the short whistle, once again the game took a different complexion, yet both sides were unable to break the shackles. There were some anxious moments for both sides during the run of play, but it was after three minutes of extra time that Dhanushka booted the ball into the net to seal victory.

Meanwhile, the earlier game between Renown and Blue Star ended in a scoreless draw.

In today’s games, Blues Eagles will take on New Young at 3.30 p.m. while Ratnam will confront Defenders at 7.30 p.m.
