Probe Minister Ranatunga’s assertions: Fr tells CID

Archdiocesan Director for Social Communications, Rev.Fr.Jude Chrysantha Fernando handed over a petition to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday requesting it to conduct an investigation into a statement made by Minister Prasanna Ranatunga on the 2019 Easter Sunday Attack recently.

The petition claims that Minister Ranatunga had around November 26 stated to the media that former President Maithripala Sirisena should be held responsible for the Easter Sunday carnage and therefore, legal action should be taken against him.

In his petition, Fr.Fernando said that he strongly believed Ranatunga, who is a powerful Cabinet Minister of the present government and an experienced politician should have made such a statement with responsibility.

He said Minister Ranatunga must be accusing Maithripala Sirisena in public, who is a former president of the country, a present parliamentarian and a Party leader representing the government as he possesses firm evidence to prove allegations made by him.

Fr. Chrysantha Fernando also said Minister Ranatunga is levelling such allegations against former President Sirisena at a time where a criminal case is being heard only against then IGP Pujith Jayasundara and then Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando.

Therefore, Fr. Fernando requested the CID to conduct an impartial investigation into Minister Ranatunga’s statement and take legal action against the former President regardless of his position if he is proven guilty for the allegations against him.
