India Omicron cases mount to 143; Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra together log 30 infections

Omicron cases in India mounted to 143 on Saturday. Four states, Telangana (12), Maharashtra (8), Karnataka (6), and Kerala (4) together reported 30 cases of the new variant of COVID-19 yesterday.

Telangana saw a single-day spike in Omicron cases on Saturday. With 12 new cases of Omicron, Telangana tally goes up to 20. Of the total new cases, 10 were travellers from “non-risk” nations.

Maharashtra on Saturday reported 8 more cases of Omicron variant of COVID-19, taking the state’s total number of Omicron infection to 48.

Meanwhile, Karnataka saw six new Omicron cases, pushing the state’s tally to 14. Of these total new Omicron cases, four were below the age of 18.

In Karnataka, five cases of Omicron of the total new cases were from two cluster outbreaks of COVID-19 in different educational institutions. The sixth patient is the international traveller from the UK.

Kerala reported 4 new cases of Omicron on Saturday taking state’s tally to 11. The four new fresh infections were detected from Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram and from the Thrissur district of the state.

Maharashtra has total 48 Omicron cases, Delhi 22, Telangana 20, Rajasthan 17, Karnataka 14, Kerala 11, Gujarat 7, while, Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have reported one case each of the new variant of COVID-19.

As per a report by members of the National COVID-19 Supermodel Committee, the daily cases in India are expected to increase once the Omicron starts displacing Delta as the dominant variant.
