Elections Commission preparing for LG Polls - Chairman

The Elections Commission is preparing for the forthcoming Pradeshiya Sabha, Urban Council and Municipal Council elections,Chairman Nimal G. Punchihewa said.

He told the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) for Electoral Reforms that the term of office of Local Government bodies expires on March 20, 2022.

He stated this when the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee, Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and its members inquired about this during a meeting on Wednesday.

The Elections Commission Chairman further stated before the PSC that it is essential to prepare for the forthcoming Local Government elections about four months in advance.

Accordingly, if the Local Government elections are held without any change and under the existing legal conditions, the dates for those elections will have to be announced around January 2022.

The other members of the PSC are Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva, Prof. G.L. Peiris, Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi, Douglas Devananda, Wimal Weerawansa, Basil Rajapaksa, M.U.M. Ali Sabry, Jeevan Thondaman and MPs Rauf Hakeem, Anura Dissanayake, Kabir Hashim, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Mano Ganeshan, M.A. Sumanthiran, Madura Vithanage and Sagara Kariyawasam.
