CDS Bipin Rawat, his wife, all on-board ill-fated Mi-17V5 DEAD

and 11 other people on board have died after the chopper they were in crashed on Wednesday. 

The IAF said, Gp Capt Varun Singh SC, Directing Staff at DSSC with injuries is currently undergoing treatment at Military Hospital, Wellington.

Around noon today (December 8), an IAF Mi 17 V5 helicopter with a crew of four members with the CDS and 9 other passengers on board met with a tragic accident near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. 

General Rawat was on a visit to Defence Services Staff College, Wellington (Nilgiri Hills) to address the faculty and student officers of the Staff Course on Wednesday.

President Ram Nath Kovind said, “The nation has lost one of its bravest sons. His four decades of selfless service to the motherland was marked by exceptional gallantry and heroism… It’s deeply painful for me to learn of the loss of lives in the chopper 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a picture with General Rawat and said, “Gen Bipin Rawat was an outstanding soldier. A true patriot, he greatly contributed to modernising our armed forces and security apparatus. His insights and perspectives on strategic matters were exceptional. His passing away has saddened me deeply.”

PM Modi also said that as India’s first CDS, General Rawat worked on diverse aspects relating to the Indian Armed Forces including defence reforms. 

“He brought with him a rich experience of serving in the Army. India will never forget his exceptional service,” the Prime Minister said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in a tweet said the untimely death of General Rawat is an “irreparable loss” to the Indian Armed Forces and the country. 

The Defence Minister further said, as the first Chief of Defence Staff, Gerenral Rawat had prepared plans for jointness of the Indian Armed Forces.

Rajnath Singh also prayed for the speedy recovery Gp Capt Varun Singh, who  is undergoing treatment at the Military Hospital, Wellington.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said General Bipin Rawat was one of the “bravest” soldiers, who has served the motherland with utmost devotion. “His exemplary contributions and commitment cannot be put into words,” the Home Minister said.  

The Union Home Minister also expressed condolences on the demise of Madhulika Rawat and 11 other Armed Forces personnel. He even prayed for the speedy recovery of Gp Capt Varun Singh.

General Rawat, 63, was appointed India’s first-ever Chief of Defence Staff in January 2019.
