Farmers should be made aware on applying the right quantities of fertilizer from the Yala season in accordance with the soil composition of the agricultural fields, Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said.
The Minister was chairing a discussion held at the Ministry yesterday. The Minister also pointed out that the importation of chemical fertilizers could be restricted if a thorough inspection of the soil in each area is carried out and fertilizers applied to suit the composition of the soil.
“Equipment required for soil testing has been provided to 362 Agrarian Development Regional Centres. Another 200 centres could be provided with soil testing equipment next year. Accordingly, the composition of the soil in all parts of the island can be measured and understood. This will determine the type and amount of fertilizer required for the soil in each area,” he said.
