Ashwin surpasses Anil Kumble in Elite list of Indian Bowlers

New Delhi:

Ravichandran Ashwin, with his class bowling, has surpassed the likes of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in taking 50 or more wickets in a calendar year most number of times.

Ashwin took 62 wickets in 2015, 72 wickets in 2016 and 56 wickets in 2016. Both Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble took 50+ wickets in three different years each.

Most instances by Indian bowlers picking 50+ wickets in calendar year:

    Ravichandran Ashwin (4) – 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021

    Harbhajan Singh (3) – 2001, 2002, 2008

    Anil Kumble (3) – 1999, 2004, 2006

    Kapil Dev (2) – 1979, 1983

In the second test between India and New Zealand, Ashwin took the most wickets (8) for India in both innings combined. He dismissed Henry Nicholls, Tom Blunder, Tim Southee and Somerville in the first innings, resulting in complete Kiwis dismantle for 62 runs.

Ashwin started the second innings with an early wicket of openers Tom Latham (6) and Will Young (20). But he only stopped when two more of the kiwis players, Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls, had made their way to the dressing room.

During the first Test in Kanpur last month, Ashwin went past Harbhajan to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.

Ashwin, with 426 wickets, is only 9 scalps away from overtaking Kapil Dev as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the longest format of the game.
