World Bank should help uplift Working Class - Labour Minister

The World Bank (WB) should broadly contribute for the social welfare of the Working Class when it allocates money for the physical development of countries,” Labour Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva said.

He said that it is nessesary to increse the social and economic status of the Working Class in order to strengthen the national economy.

“A country cannot be developed through physical development. It is also necessary to improve the social welfare of the people contributing for the growth of national economy,” the Minister said.

The Minister was speaking during a meeting with a Practice Leader for Human Development at the World Bank, Rene Leon Solano at the Ministry yesterday.

“Although there are many job opportunities in the Private Sector, the country’s youth are reluctant to apply for them as there is no social welfare and security programme in the Private Sector like the pension sheme in the Government Sector.

Therefore, we need to form a social security system for the consolidatetion of job security to attract youth to the Private Sector,” the Minister said.

“The Government is curently working on introducing a pension scheme and social security system for the Private Sector as well,” he added.
