Two held in Sapugaskanda murder detained

The Mahara Acting Magistrate yesterday granted permission for police to detain and question the married couple arrested in connection with the murder of a woman, whose body was later found inside a travelling bag left abandoned at Sapugaskanda, for 48 hours.

The suspects were produced before the court on Friday and they are to be produced before the court once again yesterday. The suspects are residents of Mattakkuliya, who reportedly had last accompanied the deceased woman in a three-wheeler.

The victim had been identified as Mohamed Safiq Fatima (44), a resident of Maligawatta. She was a mother of two children. She had been missing since October 28 and her husband had lodged a complaint with the Bloemendhal Police on November 1 over her disappearance. Police said the woman’s body was identified by her husband at the Ragama Hospital.

Following the recovery of the body, four police teams have been deployed to investigate the incident. Police arrested a married couple, both 36 and residents of Summitpura in Mattakkuliya, after they confessed to killing the woman.
