Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said that Sandahiru Seya built in honour of the valiant soldiers who stopped bloodshed in the country is now dedicated for the people’s veneration.
“My fervent wish while vesting this magnificent Chethiya to the Buddha Sasana is that the country will never undergo such a gloomy and miserable era again,” he said.
He said that he had enormous confidence in the Security Forces.
Speaking at the unveiling of Sandahiru Seya in Anuradhapura, the Prime Minister said that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who was then Secretary of Defence succeeded in steering the Security Forces on the correct path to peace with the support of the Tri-Forces Commanders.
“The present and future leaders of the country should protect the valiant soldiers who made many sacrifices for the freedom of the country,” he said.
He said that the security personnel from the first Police Constable who died in Mannar while engaged in a mission to apprehend the assassin of then Jaffna Mayor Alfred Duraiappah to the last soldier who died in action at the Nandikadal Lagoon have made many sacrifices for the sovereignty of the nation.
“May merits pass on to them whenever this Chethiya is venerated by the public,” he said.
The Prime Minister said that the Security Forces started constructing the Chethiya after ending the 30 years’ protracted war. “King Dutugemunu started building irrigation tanks and Chethiya after ending the war. Our Government also rehabilitated thousands of ex-combatants and integrated them into the society,” he said.
