Ranjan Madugalle rewrites ICC record books again!

International Cricket Council’s Chief Match Referee and Sri Lankan born former national skipper, Ranjan Senerath Madugalle has rewritten the International Cricket Council’s record books again!

He also becomes the most senior match referee and the Sri Lanka’s series against the West Indies at home which began at Galle yesterday, also marks the 200th occasion that he has functioned as the ICC match referee, the highest number for an ICC Match Referee.

He also was the ICC match referee who was the first to surpass officiating at 100 Tests and 150 ODIs He now also has the record now for the highest number of ODI matches in which he has officiated in which he has surpassed 300 matches and which stands now at 304. While both his benchmarks were outside Sri Lanka, it is also personifying that is 200th Match as Match Referee was in a home series which was against the West Indies.

Madugalle, (62) who started his career in the Pakistan- Zimbabwe Test series in 1993, also functioned at the Match Referee in the just concluded T 20 ICC World Cup between Australia and New Zealand. He has also officiated as the Match Referee at 85 T -20 matches, which is the highest for an individual. He has also functioned as the ICC Chief Match Referee in as much as eight World Cup finals including in 1999 ( in which Sri Lanka were the Defending Champions) , 2003 (where Sri Lanka emerged Finalists) and 2019. He played in 21 Tests for Sri Lanka , captaining the side on two occasions. He played for Sri Lanka in 63 ODIs , captaining the National Side on 13 occasions.

A schoolboy prodigy, he also not only captained Royal College, Colombo 7 in the Royal Thomian Centenary year in 1979, but also was the College Head Prefect and winner of the Frederick Donhorst Memorial Prize, Royal College’s most coveted Prize for the best all round student in the school in 1979. He was also awarded the Bata Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year. Earlier, he was the Trinity College Under 12 and Under 14 Cricket Captain and was adjudged the best all round student in the Trinity Junior School in 1969.
