Pro-LTTE supporters disrupt TNA MPs meeting in Canada

A group of LTTE supporters disrupted a meeting attended by Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs M.A.Sumanthiran and Shanakyan Rasamanickam in Canada on Saturday while calling Sumanthiran a traitor and demanding a separate state for Tamils in Sri Lanka.Pro-LTTE groups clashed at the meeting and the Canadian police too had to be called-in to quell the situation.

This was a meeting held to brief the Tamil community in Toronto about ongoing diplomatic efforts to push for a political settlement that devolves power to the island’s Tamil minority.

The protestors initially gathered outside the venue and later stormed the meeting hall and disrupted the proceedings.

They were carrying LTTE flags and were demanding a separate state for the Tamils while rejecting the TNA’s push for a political settlement to Sri Lanka’s ethnic question.

However, the Toronto Police had to be called to the scene after the demonstrators forcibly entered the venue carrying LTTE flags. The protesters’ claim was that they did not want a political settlement and insisted a separate state of Tamil Eelam was the only solution to the Tamil national question. The demonstrators held banners accusing Sumanthiran of being a “Sinhala patriot” who wanted to live with the Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka.
