Nitin Gadkari prepares roadmap to make Indian automobile sector world No. 1

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Friday said that his aim is to make the Indian automobile industry number one in the world for the export of electric vehicles in five years.

“India’s future is very bright. At present, the turnover of our automobile industry is ₹ 7.5 trillion.

“Within five years, we will have more than Rs 1.5 trillion and this is the industry which is generating the most employment, exports and revenue to the state and central governments,” he said. 

Gadkari said that his vision and commitment is to make the Indian automobile industry number one in the world for the export of electric cars, scooters, buses, auto rickshaws and trucks in five years. Are cautious about ecology and the environment.

The three important pillars of Indian society are economy, ethics and ecology and environment. 

“With this in mind, we want to make India the world’s number one economy,” he said.

In addition, Gadkari commended the work done by startups, businesses and research establishments in Bengaluru in this regard, noting the government’s plans to promote LNG, green hydrogen from wastewater, ethanol, electric vehicles and flex engines.

He also appealed to the people to buy vehicles with electric or flex engines (where one can use 100% petrol or ethanol), which would help in controlling pollution. 

“Our first priority is waterways, second railways, third roads and fourth aviation, but unfortunately now 90 per cent of passenger traffic is on road and 70 per cent is freight traffic,”

“When I took over as Minister, the National Highway was 96,000 km and we have 1,47,000 km at present, the speed of construction of National Highway was 2 km per day and now it is 38 km per day. As far as road construction of national highways is concerned, we are now at the top of the world,” he added.

“We are at the forefront of road construction, my mission, my goal is to make Indian roads US-standard within three years,” he said, citing the example of completing the highway work in record time. 

Commenting on 26 Green Express Highway, the minister said, “we are also constructing Green Express Highway from Chennai to Bengaluru.”

Highlighting the initiatives taken by the government for 103 waterways while being the Minister of Shipping and Waterways, he said that waterways are very economical.

Describing logistical cost as a problem in India, Gadkari said, “Our logistical cost is 16 to 18 per cent and we are working towards reducing it.”
