NEET counselling delayed as Centre to revisit Rs 8lakh EWS caveat

The Centre before Supreme Court on Thursday said that it will revise the limit of Rs 8 lakh annual income limit which is set for the determining Economically Weaker Sections(EWS) in the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) examinations and promised to come up with fresh decision within four weeks. 

In the view of decision period, Centre assured to push further the counselling process of NEET admission until the fresh decision is taken. 

The Centre had to appear in front of Supreme Court following a petition related to NEET-AIQ. The court had raised questions over EWS. 

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was appearing for the Centre told the Court, “In the matter I have instruction to say that the govt has decide to revisit the criteria. We will formulate a committee and take a fresh decision within 4 weeks. Till then the counselling shall remain stayed only. I give my assurance”.

Meanwhile, the opposition suggested that this development should be scheduled for next year as this years’ admission have already got postponed. 

Responding to that, Justice DY Chandrachud asked the Centre if the option can be considered. “What happens is that we are at the end of November. Suppose you complete it by the end of December and then implementation etc and then the terms would begin only sometime in February-March. Two months, the students are losing the time. This is something you may want to consider”.
