Nadia road accident: PM Modi announces ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for kin of deceased, Rs 50K for injured

New Delhi:

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the death of 18 people in a road accident in Nadia district of West Bengal. The Prime Minister Office (PMO) in a tweet announced that an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives in the accident. 

The injured would be given Rs 50,000 each.

In a tweet President Kovind expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. 

Five people were injured and 18 others died after a matador car they were traveling in hit by a truck in Phulbari area of Nadia district late on Saturday.

Police said that the people onboard the matador car were enroute to the Nabadeep crematorium from Bagda of North 24 Parganas to cremate a body. 

The injured people were shifted to Shaktinagar district hospital. The truck against which the vehicle collided was loaded with stones and was parked on the side of the road, but suddenly started at Phulbari area of Hanskhali police station area of Nadia.

Earlier in the day, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee offered condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the road accident in Nadia. 

She also assured all necessary assistance and support by the government of West Bengal to the kin of the victims. “We are beside you in this sad hour,” Banerjee added.
