Janidu Himsara sportsman par excellence

22 year old, S.K.Janidu Himsara, an old boy of St.Anthonys’ College, Katugastota is a talented sportsman involved in Cricket, Rugby, Basketball and Athletics. He started Cricket at the age of Eight years at the Kandy Cricket Academy.

In the year 2011 joined St.Anthony’s to improve the game of Cricket and in the year 2012 he Captained the College Under 13 Cricket team and in 2014 he was the Captain of the Under 15 cricket team as well.

In the same year he represented the Under 15 National team under the coaching of Samitha Danushka at the tour of Malyasia as an opening bowler and was awarded the Man of the Match at the Tuankue Jaafar International Cricket series against Malaysia claiming six wickets for Twenty four runs in Eight overs. He was awarded College Wings which is a prestigious award for representing the national team. Janidu captained the Under 17 Cricket team in 2016 and at the age of fifteen years he was able to represent the School 1st XI Cricket team under the Captaincy of Nimesha Gunasinghe, coached by Tharaka Gunaratne. He represented the College 1st XI Cricket team for Five years (2014 – 2018) and represented Four ‘Big Matches’ and was the Vice Captain of the Under 19 Central Province Cricket team for the Under 19 Super Provincial Cricket team organized by Sri Lanka Cricket for the season 2017/18.

He was selected as the Captain of the 1st XI Cricket team of the College as a 5th year Coloursman under the coaching of Sampath Perera and scored 700 plus runs claiming thirty wickets in the Season and the highest score was 90 not out against Royal College, Colombo. His best bowling figures for the season was claiming Five wickets for Thirty One runs against St.Anne’s, Kurunegala and was awarded the ‘Best Fielder’ in the ‘Big Match’ of 2016 and 2018 against Trinity College and the man of the Match too at the Cricket match against St.Josephs’ at the Murali/Vas Trophy match in 2018.

He started playing Rugby at the age of Twelve years in the Under 12,14,16 and 18 teams representing the College and played at the First Fifteen Rugby team for four years as a fourth year coloursman and played Centre,full back & Wing positons.

He was a member of the Plate Championship in the Singer League in 2017 and played for Kandy Combined Schools ‘Kandy Reds’ Rugby team as a full back and wing Played in the College Basketball team which became Central Province champions and Runners-up at the Under 13, 15 and 17 levels at the All Island Schools Basketball tournaments and was awarded the ‘Best Offensive player’ at the Under 15 Central Province tournament. In Athletics he took part in Kandy District Meets in 200 metre and Long jump events.
