India requests Canada to declare 'Sikhs for Justice' as terrorist organization

New Delhi:

India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally requested the government of Canada to declare the controversial group called ‘Sikhs for Justice’ a terrorist organization.

The NIA held talks with law enforcement counterparts in Ottawa,

Canada

this week and provided them with information and dossiers to support its case against

‘Sikhs for Justice’

.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the request was made earlier this year and the NIA team’s visit to Ottawa was to confirm India’s claim that the SFJ was promoting a separatist agenda

in India, especially in Punjab.

The SFJ, through its legal counsel Gurpatwant Pannu, has consistently promoted a separate Khalistan.

According to a release issued by the High Commission of India in Ottawa, the NIA team was in Ottawa on Thursday and Friday at the invitation of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or RCMP and met with the “International Crime and Counter-Terrorism Bureau of Global Affairs Canada and Public Safety Canada.” 

The NIA team held additional meetings with senior officials of the International Affairs Division of the US to deepen and expand India-Canada cooperation in combating terrorism and curbing global terrorist financing.

The visit was intended to “better coordinate investigations against suspected entities and individuals of terrorism and to discuss other criminal cases,” the release said. The NIA team was led by an Inspector General of Police.

Ajay Bisaria, India’s High Commissioner in Ottawa, welcomed the visit and tweeted that the India-Canada strategic partnership also provides strong cooperation in the investigation of crime and terrorism.
