First phase of cancer treatment centre opens tomorrow

 
The first phase of the Cancer Treatment Centre at the Kandy National Hospital will be opened tomorrow (11). 
 
The opening ceremony will be held under the patronage of Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella. 
 
This is the largest cancer treatment centre ever established within a hospital and it is only second to Maharagama Apeksha Hospital in terms of cancer treatment in the country’s health care system and this unit is also equipped with the latest technology.
 
Construction of the first phase of this 12 storied cancer treatment centres has been completed and 33 percent of the construction of the second phase has already been completed. The Government will spend Rs. 1945 million for the construction of this 600 bed treatment center.
 
This was revealed at a special discussion held at the Ministry of Health recently to inquire into the current status of the ongoing and proposed development projects at the Kandy National Hospital and the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.
 
A 9-storey building for the Thalassemia Treatment Center will also be constructed at the Kandy Hospital premises at a cost of Rs. 1700 million. About 35 percent of its construction has been completed, and this Thalassemia centre will provide treatments to children with thalassemia and it will also be equipped with facilities to perform bone marrow transplants.
 
Twenty percent of the construction work of the Emergency Care Unit at the Kandy Hospital premises at a cost of Rs. 1700 million has been completed. The 7-storey building will house three intensive care units, three operating theatres, a neurosurgical treatment unit, emergency treatment units and more.
 
The Minister instructed the officials to expedite the construction of the third floor of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.
 
Health Ministry Secretary Maj. Gen. Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena, Secretary to the Ministry of State Dr. Saman Ratnayake, Director of the Kandy National Hospital Dr. Aruna Jayasekara, Director of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital Dr. Arjuna Tillekeratne, Chief Financial Officer Hemantha and others participated in this occasion.
