Father, son remanded over SUV crash in Mahabage

The father and his teenaged son who were arrested for causing a fatal accident that claimed the life of one person near the Welisara cemetery were yesterday ordered to be remanded till November 19 by Wattala Magistrate Heshan de Mel.

They were ordered to be remanded till November 19 by the Wattala Magistrate after being produced before the Wattala Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning

One person was killed and three others were injured when the SUV jeep driven by a teenager (15 years) veered off the road at around 9.05 am and collided with a car, a three wheeler and two motorcycles coming in the opposite direction.

The deceased was a 51-year-old carpenter and one other is in critical condition. Relatives of the deceased had gathered in front of the Mahabage Police yesterday (5) and demanded that the responsible party be punished by law. The deceased’s daughter said that her family was helpless because of what the businessman’s son had done due to the negligence of the parents.

“My brother’s limbs are all severely injured. His life ended like that. He is fighting to the death. Today my father is dead. Who is responsible for the future ahead of us? They don’t care. It would be better to resolve this without subjecting the law. The child does not even have a driver’s licence. We request that legal action be taken against this. Others, like my father, have been treated unfairly before. I ask for justice,” she said.
