Education Ministry to appoint new UGC chairperson in one month

New Delhi:

As the tenure of D.P. Singh, current chairman of University Grant Commission (UGC), will end in the first week of December, the Union Education Ministry is supposed to appoint a new UGC chairperson within a month.

Reportedly, the candidate shall not be an official from Central or state government. 

The ministry had set some norms for the selection of chairperson. For instance, the candidate must have global experience in innovation and should have suitable skills to manage the organisation. The age of candidate should not exceed from 60 years. The tenure of UGC chairperson is five years. 

The official notification has been released and the candidates can submit their application till November 30. However, the selection committee can still choose an eligible person besides of the applications received. 

The UGC is a statutory body which is responsible for coordinating, determining and regulating standards of higher education. It also authorises the recognition to universities across nation and grants funds to those recognised universities and colleges.
