Surprisingly, UAE officials were unaware of this Chinese conspiracy. British newspaper The Guardian reports that US intelligence agencies found evidence of construction work being carried out in the UAE by the Chinese earlier this year.

US intelligence agencies have found that China was setting up a secret military base in the UAE.

The Wall Street Journal reports that satellite images of the Khalifa port showed suspicious construction  being carried out by the Chinese inside a container terminal. The construction work was being executed by Cosco, a Chinese shipping corporation. Extensive excavations were being carried out for a multi-storied building. The site was kept secret to avoid scrutiny.

UAE officials had no knowledge of China’s illegal military activity

The US administration led by president

Joe Biden

held emergency talks with UAE officials regarding the illegal military construction which was being carried out by the Chinese. Most surprisingly, the UAE authorities had absolutely no knowledge of China’s illegal military activity which was being carried out in utmost secrecy.

In May and August there were direct talks between Joe Biden and Prince Muhammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi. In September, US National Security Adviser Jack Sullivan and West Asia Coordinator at the White House Brett McGurk visited the UAE and presented details of US intelligence to Emirati officials.

This week McGurk came to see the crown prince of the UAE. Construction was halted after US officials inspected the Khalifa site.

The report comes four years after the Chinese navy set up a naval base in Djibouti. China has built its first out-of-country military base in Djibouti, located within the Chinese-operated commercial port of Doraleh.
