China: Chinese govt closes highways as heavy smog engulfs Beijing

With one of the fastest growing economies in the world, China has been battling severe pollution rising out of frantic industrial activity for many years.

On Friday,

as heavy pollution shrouded the Chinese capital, v

isibility in parts of Beijing was less than 200 metres. The severely low visibility 

forced the Chinese authorities to close several highways.

China had issued a heavy pollution alert earlier this week, imposing curbs on construction activities, factories and schools.

However, with a cold wave from Siberia expected to hit parts of northern China over the weekend,

the smog and pollution

over Beijing is expected to disperse.

The PM2.5 level in several Chinese cities was at an alarming 234 micrograms per cubic metre on Friday, according to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.
