Child abuse cases: video recording centres to be established

The Cabinet has approved the establishment of video recording centres to record evidence from victims of child abuse cases in all provinces, said Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Pre-School and Primary Education, School Infrastructure and Education Services Piyal Nishantha.

He said that children would be subjected to a great deal of stress by going from time to time to record the evidence of their ordeal and that the new initiative will help to minimize it.

The Minister said that after recording video evidence, it could be used instead of getting statements from the child frequently.

He said that next year, five such centres will be established in five provinces for the first time. The Minister of State stated that the existing laws are adequate for the implementation of the law against child abuse cases and that attention should be paid to removing obstacles to their implementation under certain amendments.

He said that in some cases, cases involving children in the Courts take up to 20-25 years to complete.
