Blanket fire review of hospitals in MP, medical education dept to have own civil wing

As the death toll of infants rose in Kamla Nehru Hospital, Madhya Pradesh minister Vishvas Kailash Sarang said on Wednesday, “CM today directed all District collectors to review and implement fire and electric safety audits within the next 10 days in both Pvt and govt hospitals of the state.”

“CM also directed that medical education dept will have its own civil wing which will look after the maintenance work of all medical colleges & hospitals.Kamla Nehru hospital maintenance work earlier was with CPA but now temporarily given to PWD,” he added.

Meanwhile, eight more infants have died in last 36 hours in Kamla Nehru Hospital, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, taking toll to 12 so far. Late on Monday, a fire broke out in children’s ward of the hospital in which initially 4 newborns died.

Dr. Jyotsna Srivastava, head of department (HOD), Pediatrics department, Kamla Nehru Hospital said, “40 children were admitted at that time and hospital staff immediately evacuated all of them. On that day 4 children had died and after 36 hours, 8 more children died.”

Dean of Gandhi Medical College Dr. Jitendra Shukla, Hamidia Hospital superintendent Dr. Lokendra Dave, and Kamla Nehru Hospital director Dr. KK Dubey have been removed from their posts. Sub engineer of CPA (Electricity wing) Awdhesh Bhadauria has also been suspended after the incident of fire in the Bhopal hospital. 

Meanwhile, state minister Vishvas Kailash Sarang said that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has on Wednesday directed all district collectors to review and implement fire and electric safety audits within the next 10 days in both private and government hospitals of Madhya Pradesh.

“Chief Minister has also directed that medical education department will have its own civil wing which will look after the maintenance work of all medical colleges and hospitals. Kamla Nehru Hospital maintenance work earlier was with CPA, but now temporarily given to PWD,” he added. 

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on Tuesday, condoled the death of children and ordered a high-level enquiry into the incident. He said the investigation will be done by ACS Public Health and Medical Education Mohammad Suleman.
