Appoint PSC to probe gas leak incidents - Sajith

A Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) should be appointed to study the recent fire accidents caused by leakages in the LPG cylinders as they have caused a fear among the public, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament on Saturday (27).

He made this request making a statement in Parliament following SJB MP Chaminda Wijesiri and several MPs who spoke of such an accident in Polonnaruwa which caused the death of a young woman to which Leader of the House and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena expressed his condolences on it.

However he added that those incidents were not anything caused by a mixture as speculated by some. Minister Gunawardena added investigations were in progress.

Opposition Leader Premadasa urged the government not to evade the issue as it is a serious issue as such gas leakages accidents have already occurred at Kapparathota, Alawwa, Ratnapura, Reid Avenue in Colombo, Pannipitiya, Nikaweratiya and Welikanda.

He added that the government has failed to provide a clear explanation on these accidents based on scientific evidence to clear away the public fear.

He said further these incidents are matters related to national security which this government pledged to protect. He added that a former Executive Director of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) blamed the gas companies for these accidents. He said that these accidents were a result of the change in the propane to butane ratio of LPG cylinders.

He added that in three reports, CAA and a local company on the composition of 12.5kg and 18kg gas cylinders, it is revealed the ratio of propane and butane which was supposed to be at 70:30 has been changed to 50:50. The people are living in fear and the government should reveal the truth.
