UNP will form Govt by 2024 - Vajira

The United National Party (UNP) will form a Government in December 2023 under the leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe to address all issues currently facing the country, including the issue of teachers’ salaries, party Chairman and former Minister Vajira Abeywardena said in Karandeniya on Sunday (24).

Abeywardena expressed these views while participating in a meeting held in the Karandeniya electorate to make the UNP supporters aware of the reorganization of the party.

“Ranil Wickremesinghe became the Prime Minister of the country on January 8, 2015 and increased the salaries of the principals and Teachers by more than 100 per cent. Accordingly, the salaries of Grades 3-11 of the teacher service were increased from Rs. 13,410 to Rs. 27,740. This was a 106% increase. The basic salary of Grade 1 education administrative service was increased by 107% from Rs.36,755.00 to Rs. 76,175.00 and the salary was added to the pension,” he said.

He also said that although many people blamed the previous regime then, but asked what the plight of these teachers would have been if they had to live on the old salary without the increment given by Ranil Wickremesinghe’s Government.
