The UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer-Hamdy congratulated the three women Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) promoted to the rank of acting Deputy Inspectors General (DIG) recently.
The UN official in a Twitter message stated that the promotion of the three Police officers is an important step towards recognising the need for equality and the contribution of women to law enforcement.
“Congratulations to the three women promoted to Acting DIGs. An important step towards recognising the need for equality and the contribution of women to law enforcement. Full and effective participation of women across all ranks leads to a more effective response to GBV (gender-based violence) and measured use of force,” Singer-Hamdy tweeted.
The Sri Lanka Police, for the first time in history, simultaneously promoted three female Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) to the rank of Acting Deputy Inspector General (DIG) with immediate effect.
Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that women SSPs N.D. Seneviratne, A.R. Jayasundara and W.J. Padmini were promoted to the DIG rank with the approval of the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, subject to the cover approval of the Public Service Commission.
The police now have four female DIGs. SSP Bimsani Jasinghaarachchi was promoted in September last year as DIG for the first time in police history.
