Peradeniya Registrar, two others dismissed

The Board of Governors of the Peradeniya University has dismissed three persons, including the University’s Registrar Saman Rajapaksa.

Among those expelled from services are the University’s works engineer, Pushpika Panditharatne and works superintendent U.Bandaranaike.

The Registrar, the works engineer and the works superintendent are under investigation  for allegedly using a group of university workers during a renovation of the Registrar’s house in the Riverton area during office hours last December and obtaining a stockpile of equipment belonging to the university’s Works Department without approval.

While the university staff was on duty at the house, a group of government audit officers had gone to the scene and arrested the accused.

Investigations revealed that the engineer and the superintendent had kept noting that the university staff had been employed to work on university premises and sent to the Registrar’s house.

A spokesman for the university’s governing body said all three had been fired because they were on probation at the time.

An investigation is also underway into the five employees who reported for duty at the University Works Division and went to work at the Registrar’s house.
