The carcass of a mountain leopard which had got caught in a trap and died was discovered in the upper section of the Norwood Venture Estate on Thursday.
According to Wildlife Officer of the Nallathanniya Wildlife 0ffice Prabash Karunatillaka, the well-grown female mountain leopard was about 4 years of age. The mid-section of the leopard had got caught in the trap, killing it.
He said that the carcass would have been at the tea estate for several days since it was badly decomposed.Wildlife officials suspect that the animal which had come in search of prey, had got caught in a trap set up in the tea estate.The District Judge of Hatton and Magistrate A. I. Hettiwatte ordered that the carcass be sent to the Randenigala Veterinary Hospital for a post mortem examination.
