Minister directs relief for private bus operators

Transport Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has instructed National Transport Commission (NTC) Chairman Shashi Welgama to provide all possible relief for private bus owners to resume bus services suspended for nearly one year due to the pandemic.

The Minister made these remarks during a discussion with the representatives of the Private Bus Owners’ Association at the Transport Ministry.

During the discussion, the representatives of the Private Bus Owners’ Association explaining several issues said the Ministry should intervene to obtain relief for payment of leases, loan installments for buses and also a grace period for payment of route permit charges.

They also said that Ministry should take action to stop passenger transportation covering the label of Staff Services without a valid license. The Minister further said legal actions will be taken against private buses functioning under the name of ‘Staff buses’ without legal route permits.

The Minister told the private bus owners’ to submit their requests in writing and she would take action to provide maximum relief for these issues.
