Kavindu Galkotuwa the athletic star from Dharmaraja

Nineteen year old, Kavindu Galkotuwa, a Grade 12 student of Dharmaraja College, Kandy is a talented Athlete who was interested in the sport from the primary level in the School under the coaching of Chandana Abeyratne. He started his athletic career in the year 2010 and at his first Kids Athletic Zonal Provincial and District Athletic meets,he was the winner of the 50, 75 and 100 Metre. events for three consecutive years from 2010 to 2012.

In the year 2012 he became the Junior Athletic Captain of the School and in the year 2014 at the Zonal Athletic Meet he came first in the 100 Metres. race in the under 13 age category with a timing of 13.4 secds. and as a member of the Relay team of the School, he became first at the 4 x100 Metre relay with the other members of the team Akalanka, Ravindu and Deshan. In the same year at the Sir John Tarbet Athletic meet in the 100 & 200 Metre Races, he became first and was awarded a Merit certificate. In 2015 at the Zonal and district athletic meets he became the winner at the 100 Metre race with a timing of 12.6 secds. and secured the second place in the 200 Metre race, and at the 4×100 Metre Relay got the first place at the same meet.

In 2016 Kavindu became first in 100 Metre race with a timing of 12.2 secds. and second in 200 Metre race. In the year 2017 he secured the second place at the 100 and 200 Metre events and second in the 4×100 & 4×400 Relay events in the same meet. His team became first at the District and Provincial Meets in the 4×400 Metre Relay and at the Sir John Tarbet meet he got the sixth place and he came among the Top ten and for this achievement he received College Colours and in 2016 & 2017 he became the Junior Athletic Captain and in 2019 & 2020 he was the Senior Athletic captain.

He was the Athletic Captain of the ‘Ananda House’ for three consecutive years from 2017. In the same year at the All Island Athletic Meet in the 100 Metre race he came among the top ten by securing the seventh place and in the year 2018 at the District and Provincial Athletic Meet he became first in the 100 Metre event and established a record of 11.5 secds. in the under 18 age group. In the 4×100 Metre Relay his team became first establishing a new meet record of 44.2 secds.

In the year 2018 in the 300 Metre Hurdles he came first at the Provincial Meet establishing a meet record for his performances and he received the Provincial colours and a Provincial Champion Award.

In 2019 he came first in 100 Metre race with a timing of 11.2 secds.at the Zonal meet and secured the first place in the 100 Metre race, second place in the 200 metre race. Kavindu became the President of the Sports Council for the years 2020 and 2021 and the Senior Prefect of the School and he was awarded School Dagoba for two years in 2019 and 2020.
