IMF assistance, not a red herring - UNP

The idea that receiving International Monetary Fund (IMF) assistance to bail out the economy would lead to drastic cuts of public welfare measures is untrue, UNP Leader MP Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

Speaking at a meeting with a group of Party office-bearers and activists at Sirikotha on Saturday, the UNP Leader reminded that the former Yahapalana Government increased the public servants’ salaries by Rs.10,000 while obtaining IMF financial assistance.

“It is not correct to say that the IMF would impose severe conditions to stop relief measures to the public.

It did not put forth such conditions when we were in power. The UNP is the only Party that has presented a plan to rescue the economy, which is in shambles today,” he added.
