Farmers’ Rights must be enshrined in Constitution – Sajith

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa highlighted that the Government should mention about the rights and privileges of farmers in the Constitution.

Premadasa said no one is concerned about the rights of farmer communities who are rendering an invaluable service with great difficulties to provide rice and other essential food items to the whole nation.

Addressing a large gathering of farmer communities at Wilgamuwa Agricultural village, the Opposition Leader said the Government never listens to the grievances of farmers and they are now leading a very miserable life without having fertilizer to carry out their cultivation.

He said farmers in their thousands all over the country have given up their cultivations and staging protest campaigns almost every day requesting the agricultural authorities to provide them with adequate fertilizer for them to continue with their traditional cultivations at this moment when the dates of the Maha season had already passed. The Opposition Leader said that if the farmers’ rights are clearly mentioned in the Constitution the farmers will not have to engage in protest campaigns not only over fertilizer but also water and other day to day needs.

He said under his Government one day amendments to the Constitution over the important facilities of farmers would be definitely added so that the farmers’ requests cannot be forgotten and neglected and should be fulfilled immediately.
