Delhi police in a fix after removing barricades as farmer leaders 'will go to parliament to sell crops'

New Delhi:

Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana, on Friday, said after holding talks with farm leaders, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana Police officials, the decision of opening borders and removing barricades was taken.

“Due to farmers’ protest on the road, barricades continued which affected the interstate travel of people and commercial vehicles. After holding talks with farm leaders, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana police officials, it was decided to open borders and create a positive atmosphere,” ANI reported Delhi Police Commissioner as saying.

Soon after the Delhi Police started to remove barricades, barbed wire, giant nails and huge concrete blocks placed at Ghazipur and Tikri borders, Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait said now as the roads are opened, the farmers will go to Parliament to sell their crops.

“First, our tractors will go to Delhi. We haven’t blocked the way. Blocking the road is not part of our protest, he added.

Tikait’s statement raises worry about the law and order situation in the national capital after the opening of UP-Delhi borders.

Asthana has, however, assured that the situation is “normal” and the Delhi Police is prepared to tackle any law and order situation if it arises.

“We will act in a graded manner. We’re also preparing to tackle any law and order situation if it arises. We are prepared for any situation. We want to give a message that the situation is normal. I’m confident that we’ll handle any situation,” he said.

Asthana also informed that the Delhi Police is making changes in the existing system to make it more effective and efficient. New officers and units have been added to re-organise and strengthen the Delhi Police Special Cell.

Removal of barricades at Ghazipur and Tikri borders comes in the wake of the Supreme Court judgment who on October 21 said that farmers have the right to protest but roads cannot be blocked indefinitely. The apex court was hearing a plea against the blockade of roads between Delhi to Noida (in Uttar Pradesh) due to farmers’ protests.

A Bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul asked farmers’ unions to file their response within two weeks on the petition seeking removal of protesting farmers from roads and posted the matter for hearing on December 7.

The barricades were placed at Delhi-UP border in November last year, after farmers began their protest on at different sites against the three enacted farm laws: Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
