Watch: Naseeruddin Shah takes on Taliban apologists in India

New Delhi:

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah has condemned  “sections of Indian Muslims who are celebrating Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan”.

In a video clip recorded in Urdu, Shah criticised those who have welcomed the revival of Taliban rule in Afghanistan. “Though the return of Taliban in Afghanistan is a cause of concern for the whole world, the celebration of the barbarians by a section of Indian Muslims is no less dangerous,” he said.

He drew a distinction between what he called “Hindustani Islam” and what is practised in other parts of the world. Islam in India has always been different from Islam around the world, he said, adding, “May God not bring a time when it changes so much that we cannot even recognise it”.

Shah spoke about his own relationship with God and added that he does not need a political religion. “May God not bring a time when it changes so much that we cannot even recognise it. I am an Indian Muslim, and as Mirza Ghalib said years ago, my relationship with God is informal. I don’t need a political religion”.

On August 15, the Taliban captured Kabul soon after President Ashraf Ghani fled the nation. So far, the Taliban have controlled all the regions apart from the Panjshir province.
