The cardboard coffins introduced by the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council (DMMC) has received an order from Vietnam.
The project’s founder, Municipal Councillor Priyantha Sahabandu said this project was on behalf of persons dying from the Corona pandemic and launched at a low cost taking into consideration conservation of the environment.
With the DMMC’s Health Division introducing the use of ‘cardboard coffins’ as an environmentally friendly project, and usage increasing considerably in Sri Lanka, Vietnam has also ordered to transport two 40-foot containers of 1,100 cardboard coffins as an introductory project with the intervention of the Vietnamese Ambassador in Sri Lanka.
Sahabandu said that using an environment-friendly cardboard coffin, a funeral can be carried out at a lesser cost (about Rs.10,000) up to the cremation and that this programme has become popular as the best way in which to save people from funeral parlours extorting money from pandemic stricken victims.
“Since forests have to be destroyed in order to build wooden coffins, great environmental destruction is taking place and people have to spend from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 60,000 for a funeral.
