Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani dies, internet service suspended in Kashmir

Srinagar:

Pro-Pakistan Kashmiri separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away at the age of 92 at his home in Srinagar. The radical Islamist leader had been the face of separatist politics in Jammu and Kashmir.

He was ailing for a long time and had resigned from politics and Hurriyat last year. The last rites were performed this morning.

In March 2018, he suffered a heart attack and was admitted to the hospital.

Former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, “Saddened by the news of Geelani sahib’s passing. We can’t agree on most things, but I respect him for his perseverance and standing by his beliefs. May Allah Ta’ala give him condolences to Jannat and his family and well wishers.”

Security has been tightened in the Kashmir Valley after his death late Wednesday evening. A senior police officer in Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said restrictions, including suspension of internet services, have been imposed in the Kashmir Valley. Security has also been beefed up outside Geelani’s Hyderpora home.

Some senior Hurriyat members have been detained. Senior Hurriyat leader Mukhtar Ahmed Waza has been arrested from his residence in South Kashmir’s Anantnag town.

Home Ministry sources said Gilani had left the separatist body after 27 years of association after being sidelined by Pakistan and its military intelligence agency ISI.
