NMRA data loss: Software engineer further remanded

The software engineer of Epic Lanka Technologies arrested in connection with missing data of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has been remanded until October 6.

The case was taken up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Shalani Perera yesterday after the suspect was directed to the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO).

Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris requested the Court to remand the accused as investigations regarding the incident are still in progress while the defence attorney requested that his client be granted bail.

However, taking into consideration the sensitivity of the matter and allowing further time for the investigations to be completed, the Magistrate ordered the suspect to be remanded for a week and rejected his bail.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the software engineer at Wellapita in Divulapitiya on Tuesday (September 28). The suspect had confessed during interrogation to having erased the relevant data from the database using a special command.

Investigating officers have uncovered that the IP address of the source of the command and the IP address of the software engineer’s computer are the same.
